Examine What Elected Officials SEEK

Image
Have you ever wondered, why it so often, seems, the American electorate, fails to recognize, the difference between, politicians, who focus on making empty promises, and using rhetoric, and/ or blaming and complaining, rather than seeking the best qualified, and equipped alternatives, who faces reality, and offers viable, even, if, somewhat, unpopular solutions? While popularity often gets someone elected, it generally doesn't achieve, what's needed, and necessary! Populists often focus on shorter - term, and/ or immediate obstacles, portraying them as problems, and articulate a message, stating they are uniquely qualified and capable of making a difference. Unfortunately promises are far different from sustainable solutions! With that in mind, this article will briefly examine, consider, and review, using the mnemonic approach, why we must closely consider, and examine, what these elected officials, truly,  SEEK. 1.  Strengthening; stronger; system; suggestions; sustainable s...

Rising From the Ashes

Image
Our obligation is to give meaning to life and in doing so to overcome the passive, indifferent life. Recently I had the privilege of listening to Eva Abrams tell her Holocaust story at the Criminal Justice Day in Batavia, NY sponsored by local community groups. The theme of the day was surviving and thriving after trauma. I have read accounts of the Holocaust and seen movies presenting various aspects of the events involved. Yet they seem to be fading from the memory and awareness of the public these days. This has happened despite their central place among the events of the twentieth century. This was the first time I have heard a live first hand account from a survivor's own lips. Ninety two year old Eva made her way to her seat with the help of her walker. She sat next to her daughter Bonnie who helped her with translating certain words into English. She was born in 1926 in Oradea, Romania and was sent to Auschwitz with her family when she was seventeen. Eva shared her story of ...

Darwin Rises Again

Image
(A monograph on the current controversy in India, surrounding Darwin's Theory) [Author's Note - Although this article was written, posted & circulated in response to a statement made by a Minister in the Govt. of India, the points discussed in this article are of worldwide significance, as they relate to Darwin's Theory of Evolution.] 1. Introduction: Darwin has become a topic of hot controversy in India in the last few weeks, and of course, a subject for the media. A few weeks back, in a seminar, Hon. Shri (Mr) Satya Pal Singh, the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, made a statement that Darwin's theory of Evolution is incorrect, and that a Committee will be formed to look into this Theory. After this, the Indian scientists protested against this statement. Consequent to all this, Hon. Shri (Mr) Prakash Jawadekar, Cabinet Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD), Govt. of India, made an announcement that no such committee will be...

How Our Representatives Earn The TRUST

Image
Wouldn't it be better, if those we elect, to serve and represent us, proceeded, with the finest intentions, and earned our trust and admiration, by putting our interests, ahead of their self - interests, and/ or personal/ political agenda? Unfortunately, as indicated and demonstrated, by nearly every public opinion poll, politicians, are, consistently, considered, the least trustworthy, and most un - trusted group, by the vast majority of Americans. Although, this has been true, for generations, in recent times, perhaps because of the increase in focus, on partisan (rather than bipartisan) approaches, even fewer people, believe in their elected officials. With that in mind, this article will attempt, to, briefly, examine and consider, using the mnemonic approach, why this is important, and how our representatives, might earn our  TRUST. 1.  Tell the truth:  While this might seem obvious, very few of those, we elect, consistently, tell the truth, and maintain their integri...

What Making America GREAT Should Mean?

Image
There's often considerable difference, between, a politician's or elected official's rhetoric, promises, and slogans, and reality! We have had politicians, base their campaigns on security/ safety, the economy, change, and, in the Presidential campaign, of 2016, the successful candidate, used the catch - phrase,  Make America Great Again . However, like all slogans, reality is rarely, as simple, and/ or simplistic, as making a statement, promise, or using some rhetoric, because, there are generally, several possibilities, and every action taken, or avoided, leads to some form of ramifications! This, most recent slogan, combined a great degree of vitriol, and pitting certain groups against others, using the basics of political populism, and political agenda, rather than seeking the common good. How can anyone enhance America's greatness, until/ unless, the emphasis is, on protecting the freedoms, and liberties, which are central, to our American way of life? With that in...

Reading Between the Poverty Lines

Image
New estimates of Poverty in India The poverty estimation of the government of India was first challenged by civil society organisations on the streets and in courts in 2002. After 8 years of struggle, which have witnessed a number of strong interim orders by the Supreme Court, the heavily debated and much criticized poverty estimates suggested by the Tendulkar Committee have been accepted by the Planning Commission. These estimates count 41.8% rural and 25.7 urban families as Below the Poverty Line (BPL) rejecting earlier lower and other higher estimates. Before they begin being used to determine beneficiaries of a variety of social schemes, the Tendulkar Committee estimates will need validation from both the government and the people of India. The acceptance or rejection of these estimates and the reasons for the same is a pivotal issue as entitlements like subsidised food, health services and medicine, and free education to large sections of Indian society will be delivered to those ...

Third World Dilemma and the Developed Countries

Image
Social studies: Social Education, Communities, and Government's Role... There seem to be a measurable gap between Third world countries, their categorization and the developed world. Nations are measured with their social and industrial infrastructure and their produce, per capita income, and their military might... However, there is other more important and crucial mean to use which may prove to be more effective instrument to measure the advancement and progress of nations. That is their social structure and participating role in the advancement of humanity. This article is meant to initiate the social studies category at our website, and we sincerely hope that it will trigger a positive response from qualified social scientist to participate in posting their comments in relation to our social structure and wellbeing in this global era which leads to a new social identity to our interracial and communal coexistence. The industrial and military might in the developed world was cer...

What is Hyperlocal News?

Image
The newspaper industry has taken quite a hit in the last few years with many papers, especially smaller ones, folding. This leaves smaller communities and suburbs without their traditional main source of news. However, a new trend of local-themed web sites has sprung up to try and fill the void. It is called "hyperlocal" news, with some examples including sites like EveryBlock, Spot.us, Outside.in, Placeblogger and Patch. The goal: provide readers with the kind of information that won't make it into a major metropolitan daily, such as city council meetings, school events, high school sports, crime reports, street repairs and human interest stories. Unlike traditional news media entities, hyperlocal news sites don't rely exclusively on professional journalists. Instead, many of the sites use a mix of freelance and in-house content to fill up the web pages. The belief is that sometimes the best-informed residents of a community aren't employees of a news organizatio...
